Manhattan, Fifth Avenue reopened to cars

Fifth Avenue reopened to cars over the weekend , more than a week after water main break tore a hole in the pavement and sent a deluge of water to nearby buildings .

Fifth Avenue between 12th and 14th streets and 13th Street from University Place to Sixth Avenue, was closed to traffic since Jan. 15 , when a 136-year-old water main broke shortly after midnight .

The roads were reopened early Saturday morning , according to an alert notification from the NYC Office of Emergency Management .

The Department of Environmental Protection was scrambling to get the road repaired last week , with workers on the scene around the clock . The repairs were delayed because of the blizzard last week , but by Friday , officials were able to open one lane of Fifth Avenue , and the road was reopened fully the next day .

A spokesman for the DEP, said the agency plans to make the final restorations in the spring when the weather improves, including a permanent resurfacing .
